The life of Charm Norma McGhee Fitz

Life in Columbus is dimmer, but the sky is brighter. Heaven got a star back on Friday, April 26, 2013 when, Charm Norma returned to the Father. She was born in Greenville, Mississippi, on Janu- ary 21, 1933 to Evelyn and Preston Seard. She was an avid reader and an astute debater. She was valedictorian of her senior class in Key West, Florida. Her debate skills served her well, as she will long be remembered as the champion of the underdog who spearheaded many initiatives.

Norma was initiated into Beta Alpha Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., and gradu- ated from Florida A & M Uni- versity in 1959. She became a high school English teacher in Pinellas County, Clearwater, Florida until 1963. She then joined the Ringgold, Georgia Board of Education and taught English and Drama until 1965. She taught English and was a school administrator with the Columbus Public School, from 1965 until she retired for the third time in 2009. While in Columbus, she earned her Master of Education degree from The Ohio State University. As a retiree, she taught adult classes at the Ohio Civil Rights Commission for several years. She and her husband, Charmer Nathaniel were faithful members of the St. Paul A.M.E. Church in Columbus. She and her husband financed a room for the church’s Community Outreach Center.

She was a member of St. Paul’s Servants Club and the Daughters of Conference. Norma was nomi- nated for the Jefferson Award, a Columbus Community Service recognition. She became a charter member of Psi Eta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., a member of The Top Ladies of Distinction, Inc., and The Charms, Inc., Columbus Chapters.

Charm Norma was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2009 and fought courageously to maintain her inde- pendent lifestyle. She was pre- ceded in death by her parents, sib- lings, first husband Joseph Robin- son and second husband of forty- four years, Nathaniel Fitz. She was Chaplain and Chair of the Benevo- lent Committee of the Columbus, Chapter of Charms. She will be sorely missed.

Contributions can be made to the St. Paul A.M.E. Church, Fitz - Scholarship Fund.
